  3.     DIED. Diana Vreeland, 80ish, doyen of the fashion world who
  4. chronicled haute couture for Harper's Bazaar and Vogue; in New York
  5. City. Widely quoted and respected, Vreeland promoted new designers
  6. and styles until her retirement as editor in chief at Vogue in
  7. 1971. As a consultant to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, she
  8. organized exhibitions on the history of fashion. Despite close
  9. identification with the industry, she once observed, "Elegance is
  10. innate . . . it has nothing to do with being well dressed."
