- DIED. Diana Vreeland, 80ish, doyen of the fashion world who
- chronicled haute couture for Harper's Bazaar and Vogue; in New York
- City. Widely quoted and respected, Vreeland promoted new designers
- and styles until her retirement as editor in chief at Vogue in
- 1971. As a consultant to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, she
- organized exhibitions on the history of fashion. Despite close
- identification with the industry, she once observed, "Elegance is
- innate . . . it has nothing to do with being well dressed."
